Cavity Q & A

What causes a cavity?

Cavities are the result of decay and damage in the enamel surface of your teeth. This tooth damage typically results from improper brushing habits that allow bacteria and sugary foods to sit on the teeth, breaking apart the tooth surface.

Untreated tooth decay can spread, affecting bigger sections of a tooth. Decay can also travel into deeper layers of the teeth, causing persistent pain and developing into a tooth infection. Untreated cavities can also result in tooth loss or even a potentially life-threatening abscess.

While cavities are one of the most common dental health problems in the world, they are also one of the most preventable conditions.

What are the symptoms of a cavity?

The symptoms of a cavity depend on how large or deep the cavity is as well as its location. In the early stages of a cavity, you may not feel any symptoms. However, as the cavity worsens, you may feel:

  • Increased sensitivity
  • Persistent toothache
  • Pain when eating or drinking

You may also notice a darkened hole in the surface of your tooth.

What treatments are available for a cavity?

Dr. Gutierrez Jeffords examines the affected tooth to determine the best course of treatment. She may also request dental X-rays to determine the cavity’s depth.

In young children who don’t yet have their permanent teeth, Dr. Gutierrez Jeffords may treat minor cavities with fluoride treatments. For deeper cavities that need repair to stop the damage from spreading, she removes the decay and places a tooth-colored filling.

In teeth that are severely decayed and causing persistent pain, Dr. Gutierrez Jeffords may perform a root canal to remove the infected pulp of the tooth. She then fills the cavity with a durable dental filling and may add a crown to cover and support the remaining portion of the natural tooth.

For decayed teeth too unstable to remain in the mouth, Dr. Gutierrez Jeffords may suggest an extraction to prevent additional medical complications, including pain and infection.

What if my child is afraid of dental work?

To keep your child comfortable throughout a cavity treatment, Dr. Gutierrez Jeffords offers in-office nitrous oxide, a safe and effective sedative, often known as laughing gas. She administers the sedative through a simple breathing mask to help your child relax.

The staff at Your Child's Dentist also provide comprehensive cavity prevention resources to teach your child how to brush properly to remove food debris and bacteria that cause cavities.
