Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses safe, effective methods to keep your child relaxed during certain dental procedures. Dr. Gutierrez offers nitrous oxide to help your child relax during procedures like:

  • Fillings
  • Crowns
  • Extractions

Dr. Gutierrez can determine if your child is a good candidate for sedation dentistry during an evaluation of their health and dental needs.

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that your child breathes in through a face mask. The nitrous oxide causes your child to feel more relaxed, while still awake during the treatment.

Is sedation dentistry safe for children?

Throughout the procedure, Dr. Gutierrez and her staff monitor your child’s health. They only provide the nitrous oxide sedative for as long as your child needs it. Many children feel silly and may get a bit lightheaded, but the sedative helps them stay relaxed throughout the appointment.

Following treatment, the sedative wears off quickly and your child can resume their normal activities without side effects.

Are other sedation methods available?

In some cases, Dr. Gutierrez may recommend general anesthesia for more complex dental procedures. General anesthesia means your child will be in a deep sleep and pain-free for all dental work.

After general anesthesia, your child must spend some time in recovery to allow the anesthesia to fully wear off. They should return home to rest for several hours before resuming their usual activities.

General anesthesia may be an alternative sedation method for children with special needs who can’t remain seated for complex dental procedures.

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

For children who may otherwise avoid dental care out of fear or due to unique health needs, sedation dentistry allows work to be done to prevent additional oral health complications. Using sedation, Dr. Gutierrez can often perform long and complex dental procedures in much less time.

Other benefits of sedation dentistry include:

  • Reduced gag reflex
  • Less pain and anxiety
  • A more positive dental experience

By offering a pleasant, relaxed dental experience, Dr. Gutierrez can help build a positive relationship with your child to further reduce dental fears and anxieties.
